“Land is where our responsibility to the world is enacted”- Robin Wall Kimmerer
Created for the Redwood National and State Parks in Humboldt County, CA after a month spent in residency on the land. This cone of the coastal redwoods represents the intertwined, fragile and resilient ecosystems of the 130k acres. Here, the ecologists, geologists, rangers and Yurok, Karuk and Wiyot educators shared with me their restoration efforts on the land, their stories and their insights into the balance that is found between people and the natural world.
Each “scale” of the cone has its own story - stream daylighting and the removal of logging “skid roads”, the importance of cultural fire practices in regards to basket-weaving, the rehabilitation of the condor population, the dam removal on the Klamath river and the protection of the ecologically diverse, fog-fed oak woodlands.
