Excerpt:

"Five hundred acres are represented by a square foot patch of invasive buckthorn, or concentrated in the elusive oak galls on the smallest twig of the most expansive oak tree. Sparing samples are put into bags, strained into jars and stored in vials. Meticulous studies are drawn to capture the life and texture of the source material. This has been the process of making site-specific inks at Storm King Art Center from September to December, 2019.

Here at the art center we talk about the union between landscape and sculpture, earth and art, the elements and color. Exploring on level deeper reveals the pigments that are born from some of the chemical reactions, cells, the sugars and acids that make up our art center. This palette captures a moment in time in the ecology of the season and of the art center, rooted between mountain ranges, at the turn of its 59th year."

“This book serves as a field guide, rather than guidelines, for how you can understand and examine a landscape. May this project be a catalyst for exploration"
